I Remember My Mother

Marie_Lanci-001Every day should be Mother's Day.

After all, if your mom was anyone like mine—Marie Lanci—she was there 24/7 for her family.

Maybe she poured so much into our lives because her mom passed on when she was four years old.

She was raised by aunts. This could have filled her with bitterness. Instead, it sent the love inside her brimming over the top.

Not a day went by when she would forget to say, "God bless you" or "I love you."

The Lanci family may have been born into poverty in an east side Cleveland project. But we had a wealth of love that kept us warm, confident and together.

No matter how rough the times would get, she always would comfort us by saying it could be worse. There was always some other needier family and we should lend a hand, she would say

Marie Lanci didn't teach us compassion—she lived it. She led by example.

I think the best way you and I can honor our moms today—and everyday—is to spread the love and compassion they showed us.

Happy Mother's Day to all those that know motherhood.
